Teen s Self Esteem And Body Image - 1868 Words

Many teenagers suffer from low self-esteem and an unhealthy body image all around the world and the main cause of this epidemic is social media. On average, teenagers between ages 8-18 spend 10 hours and 45 minutes a day on social networking, with Facebook and Twitter being the most used sites among them (Lepi, 2013). But the question is why would any teen want to look at pictures of their peers who look camera ‘perfect’ 24/7 to only lower their self-esteem and how they feel about themselves? Many teens tend to compare themselves negatively to a picture or ‘selfie’ they see on social media causing their subconscious to think negative thoughts such as ‘I’m fat’ or ‘I’m ugly’ which increases the chance of them developing a severe eating disorder including anorexia nervosa or they might self-harm themselves. Friends and family photos have shown to have more of an impact then celebrity photos do as they are known contacts to them. Through this analysis it will be shown how teen’s self-esteem and their body image can be lower by idealized images of human perfection on social media sites. A person, especially teenagers, self-esteem and body image is easily lowered through social media, but what is self-esteem and body image?
